Future House Concept

One of our all-time favourites. This improbable concept comprises a subterranean home with an above grade indoor/outdoor dining pavilion and a laneway suite. Beneath the suite, a classic car showroom overlooks the central courtyard. We designed this home in 2025 for a property adjacent to one of our existing builds. Our clients acquired the property next door and tasked us with designing a laneway suite and formal garden courtyard that would integrate with the existing landscaped back yard next door. The unusual architectural solution is a response to by-law constraints that only permit a laneway suite if it is built as a secondary unit to a primary residence on the property. The subterranean home meets the definition of a primary residence while allowing the entire footprint to function as an exterior courtyard as well. The dining pavilion provides privacy from the street and appears as a mid century bungalow from the sidewalk. The subterranean home will eventually become the foundation for a future two storey dwelling that we've designed to sit atop the foundations that will already be in place.
